Golf: How to convention With Your Wedge

You're normally 50 yards short on par 5s after two shots. Or you lay up on a longer par 4. Or you just plain miss the green. What club will get the ball on and give you a opening for one putt? Your wedge. Here's how to practice with this primary club so one putt becomes your expectation.

Golf Club Left Handed Sets

The shots we're talking about here are played from 60 yards in. It's a length within which every shot can, and should, be played with one club--your sand wedge. This club has between 54 and 56 degrees of loft. It can legitimately cover that distance, and gets the ball up in the air so it stops swiftly upon landing.

The pitching stroke is like your full swing in many ways, except just shorter. Pay attentiveness to completing your turn, that is, turning your shoulders fully, and manufacture sure your wrists cock completely, about 90 degrees. Your swing needs go back no additional than where your arms are parallel to the ground.

There are differences, however. Weight stays on the left foot throughout the shot. Move into the shot on the downswing with your right side, especially with your right knee breaking toward the ball as the club approaches impact. On a full swing, the right hand will rotate to be above the left hand on the follow-through, but on this stroke the right hand stays underneath. Desist facing the target with your arms about waist high and the club pointed directly at it.

Start by studying to hit the ball to two distances, 30 yards and 60 yards, precisely. You can get these distances by keeping the length of the swing the same and varying the speed of the swing, or the reverse--same, speed, distinct length. Use the combination that makes the most sense to you.

A primary factor in getting consistent length is manufacture consistent contact. Work on hitting into the ball along the same trajectory with the club contacting the ground on the same spot (an inch in front of the ball) every time.

Once you can hit the 30-yard and 60-yard mark consistently, now learn how to hit the ball 15 yard and 45 yards. That will do two things for you: give you two more stock distances that you own, and show you how to make finer adjustments in your stroke so you can hit to the in-between distances on the course.

The final thing to learn is how to control the release, or the length the ball rolls after it lands. opening the clubface slightly adds loft and will get the ball in the air higher so it lands at a steeper angle and stops quickly. Setting your hands ahead of the ball at address de-lofts the club, manufacture the ball fly lower and run after it lands.
